Dr. Perry Hanavan

Dr. Perry C. Hanavan

Perry C. Hanavan, Au.D., teaches in the Communication Disorders program at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. He has taught audiology and technology courses the past 35 years at Augustana. He earned his BA in Psychology and Audiology at the University of Northern Colorado in 1973 and his MA at the University of Northern Colorado in 1974. In 2004, he earned the Au.D. through the Vanderbilt/Central Michigan University. He has served as president of the South Dakota Speech Language Hearing Association and Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology. He has provided audiologic rehabilitative and audiology consultation services to area schools, hospitals and private ENT clinics. He has presented numerous technology related topics at ASHA, AAA, Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology Summer Institutes, Midwest Deaf Conference and HLAA Conventions. He currently serves on the Audiology Awareness Campaign Executive Board.

This presentation will focus on new and emerging digital hearing assistive technologies (HAT) for children. Digital HAT systems for both hearing aids and cochlear implants will be discussed. Classroom sound field systems will be examined briefly. In addition, the “functional evaluation of the listener in his or her customary environment” will be included. Finally, resources for motivating children, parents and teachers to fully utilize digital listening technologies will be illustrated.
